Quick Tips:

Wardrobe
Bring several clothing options you feel confident in. Stick to solid colors, layers, and subtle textures. Avoid busy patterns or logos. Choose what you’d wear to a high-stakes meeting or speaking event. Mention your preferred backdrop color to coordinate your outfits.

Grooming
Schedule haircuts at least 2–3 days before your session.

Makeup
If you’re skilled at applying makeup and prefer to do your own, learn more about the distinction between strobe and natural daylight makeup. Or, if you prefer to place your trust in the capable hands of a cosmetics expert, we’re happy to provide one at additional cost.

Skincare & Hydration
Since we prefer minimal retouching for a natural appearance, good skin care and preparation makes a huge difference. Foundation looks better and more radiant on adequately hydrated and exfoliated skin. For more on proper skincare, visit our Session Tips page.

Skin Breakouts
Blemishes are unpredictable, but no cause for concern. Routine retouching removes anything that’s impermanent, like zits.

Important: The Solution for Clogged Pores
If you’re like most people, unsightly blackheads — the result of an accumulation of sebum, the oily secretion of the sebaceous glands lodged in facial pores — are unavoidable. Though it may not be apparent to the naked eye, the powerful sensors in modern digital cameras are unforgiving. And despite common perceptions, blurring skin is not acceptable when the objective is to retain natural-looking skin texture. Be mindful that eliminating blackheads or dry, flaky skin manually in post-production is time-intensive and may incur additional retouching charges. Our recommendation is to avail yourself of a professional salon facial or use an over-the-counter exfoliating product a couple days ahead of your session for clear, healthy, and glowing skin.

Facial Hair
Remove unwanted facial hair at least two days before and avoid tweezing the day of your session. If you wax, allow even more time. While hair grows at different rates for everyone, the further in advance, the better, especially for sensitive skin. Stray growth can be fixed in retouching, though it’s best to get it right in camera.

Lips
Don’t forget to exfoliate and moisturize your lips. Apply a warm, wet washcloth gently over your lips, followed by a soothing balm. In the case of chapping, gently massage your lips with a soft-bristle toothbrush to exfoliate, followed by a nourishing lip balm or Vaseline.

Alcohol
For clear eyes and skin — and to minimize the dreaded, dark under-eye puffy circles, abstain from drinking for at least two days before your session.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a headshot session take?

That’s entirely up to you. Fully cognizant that busy professionals are time-constrained, we offer Social Media Express sessions that are under 30 minutes. Ordinarily, 15 minutes gets the job done. Honestly, for most folks that’s more than enough time to capture a flattering likeness, and we’re ready to go the minute you arrive. In fact, urgency can often bring out one’s best because, like the final minutes of a playoff game, everyone is focused! If you require hair and makeup, that’s a different discussion. But many clients prefer to arrive as they are, which is fine. Expediency is often essential, but whatever you require we can accommodate.

I’m not very outgoing and feel uncomfortable having my picture taken. Can you get results from people like me?

You’re not alone. The truth is that many people are a bit insecure in front of the camera. (Which is why modeling is a rare skill.) And here’s something that may surprise you: Even accomplished actors can experience anxiety sitting for their portrait. In my previous career as magazine creative director, it was charming to see how often celebrities expressed feeling butterflies before a session. It’s quite common. My approach is to engage in dialogue with my sitter, to get to know them, and share laughs. Soon enough their mind is elsewhere and they relax into the moment. And once their first few outtakes appear on screen, the tension dissipates and it’s smooth sailing. It's my job to ensure to have an enjoyable experience, which is reflected in the final result.

Do you offer advice on how to dress for a headshot?

Of course. Avoid patterns, stripes, or graphics to keep the viewer’s focus on on you. Simple contours and shapes work best, so avoid anything frilly or unusual. Color depends on an individual’s skin type and background preference. For headshots, it’s recommended to cover more than you might opt for in a portrait session. Since most people have particular concerns, we offer free wardrobe consultation in advance of your session day. Multiple wardrobe changes are always welcome.

I’m an actor and I need a combination of looks and locations, including formal studio sessions and outdoors. Is that doable?

Absolutely.

My skin breaks out now and then, typically before something where I need to look good, like giving a presentation or a photo shoot. Any advice?

How ironic. Nature certainly has its mischievous side. Beyond our skin preparation advice on our Tips page and our blog on Clear Skin In 5 Easy Steps, rest assured that we can eliminate any aberrant blemishes and temporary imperfections in post-production.

I like some of the more cinematic looks that you offer but I’m not sure how to articulate what I want.

I understand completely. But any time you can provide visual examples, it helps enormously. Creating mood boards on Pinterest is a great way to gather reference.

My significant other and I want an engagement portrait that’s different than the usual cheesy style we’ve seen everywhere. While I don’t see any couples in your examples, I’m wondering what you might suggest for something fresh, modern, and dramatic.

Without knowing more about you I can’t offer a concise response. Though I understand your frustration. I don’t impose one style on everyone and I love to collaborate with clients to create and capture unique moments. I’m up for anything to mark your special occasion. Let’s have a dialogue to determine the possibilities.
